Legend of the Golden Monkey is powered by Yggdrasil Gaming and is a 5 reel, Win All Ways slot which can be played from 25p to £125 per spin. As far as the Win All Ways, you will win by forming combinations of 3 or more subsequent symbols from left or right. Available to play on desktop, mobile and tablet devices, this game is based on the Chinese mythological figure who is also known as Sun Wukong.
As a result, the game has a typically Chinese feel as its set in a temple which is located in the mountains. Symbols on the reels include crows, goblets, scrolls, shields, potions and cauldrons. In ancient folklore, the Monkey King was known to transform into various animals and objects – this is evident in the Monkey King feature where the Monkey King appears randomly and changes 1 symbol into another to give you a better chance of winning combinations.
Legend of the Golden Monkey benefits from 2 wild symbols – there’s a sticky wild symbol which only appear on reels 2 and 4. When the sticky wild is part of a winning combo, it remains in place for the next spin.
There are also count down wild symbols which only appear on the middle reel – a count down wild land with a number attached to it. The count down wild will then remain sticky for the number of free spins the number shows (i.e. 3). If you get another count down wild, the number resets to 3 again (i.e. sticky for 3 more spins).
The other important symbol is the treasure chest symbol which only appears on the 5th and final reel – when it does, you will win between 2 and 50 times your stake or access to the Free Spins feature. Alternatively, 3 free spin symbols anywhere on the reels will give you access.
3 symbols will trigger the feature whilst 4 will also give you 50 times your stake as a cash prize. If you trigger it with 5 free spin symbols, you will receive 250 times your stake too! Anyway, you then get to choose from 3 free spin modes – details are as follows:
Incremental Wilds – you get 6 free spins with the Monkey King adding 1 sticky wild on the 2nd or 4th reel on each free spin. This means that last free spin will see 6 sticky wilds – i.e. 2 fully wild reels (reels 2 and 4).
Stacked Wild – you get 8 free spins with sticky wilds on the 2nd and 4th reel permanently sticky. There is also a special Triple Stacked Wild that isn’t sticky that can land on the middle reel.
Starting Wild – you get 10 free spins with a permanent sticky wild in the middle position of reel 3. Look out for sticky wilds on reels 2 and 4 too.
I found Legend of the Golden Monkey to be a medium to high variance offering with great potential for big wins in both the base game and free spins feature. I love the fact you have sticky wilds in the base game too which helps. As for the 3 free spin modes, I would recommend the Stacked Wild mode as getting that special Triple Stacked Wild on the middle reel and a couple of sticky wilds on reels 2 and 4 can result in huge wins. Visually it looks fantastic with wins of up to 1,200 times your bet available – all round, a superb offering from Yggdrasil Gaming. If you like this slot, I also recommend the high variance Vikings Go Wild (from Yggdrasil Gaming) which is superb.
Pay homage to the Legend of the Golden Monkey in this 5 reel, win all ways video slot powered by Yggdrasil Gaming. Based on the Chinese legend, it comes with plenty of extras including sticky wilds, count down wilds, transforming symbols, treasure chest bonuses of up to 1,000 coins as well as a trio of free spin feature. Play from between 25p and £125 per spin.
Legend of the Golden Monkey is based on the story of Sun Wukong and the sound and imagery have a strong historical Chinese feel. Complementing the lower value playing card suits are a selection of crowns, potions, shields, scrolls and goblets.
Look out too for sticky wilds which can land on reels 2 and 4 – when they form part of a winning combination, they’ll remain in place for the spins that follow as long as you keep winning. On reel 3, you’ll find the count down wild – when this hits, it will remain locked in position for 3 spins. The animated Legend of the Golden Monkey himself can also appear and in the process transform a symbol to create a new winning combination.
Also on offer is a treasure chest symbol which appears on reel 5 only. In the base game, this awards a payout of up to 1,000 coins and triggers the Free Spins feature – you can also trigger the free spins by landing 3 or more of the free spins symbol anywhere on the reels. Landing 3 doesn’t award any cash award but 1,000 or 5,000 coins are on offer with 4 or 5 free spin scatter symbols. Once triggered, you’ll be given the pick of 3 options:
Incremental Wilds – here you’ll be given 6 free spins. 1 wild is added on reel 2 or 4 on each free spin until you have the full complement of 6 added wilds.
Stacked Wilds – 8 free spins are added here, complete with a triple stacked wild that can hit on the middle reel.
Starting Wild – opt for this and you’ll receive 10 free spins. A sticky wild is placed in the middle of reel 3 for each of them. Standard sticky wilds can also hit on reels 2 and 4.
We found plenty to like in Legend of the Golden Monkey – the design is as glossy as we’ve come to expect from Yggdrasil Gaming with the action playing out to a catchy, Chinese style backing track. There’s plenty on offer as far as features go too. You won’t be waiting ages to trigger them and they can still deliver some tasty payouts.
The sticky wilds mean it’s possible to hit big wins in the base game too. If we had to opt for 1 of the free spins options, we’d go for the stacked wild. The variance is in the medium to high range. Yggdrasil Gaming has come up trumps again – well-designed and offering plenty of action, we’re more than happy to pay our respects to the Legend of the Golden Monkey. I also recommend Playtech’s Sun Wukong which is also based on the Legend of the Golden Monkey.
